Answer Cancer

About Answer Cancer

Answer Cancer is a vital initiative aimed at addressing the disparities in cancer awareness and screening within diverse communities, particularly among people of colour, LGBTQ+ individuals and those in financially deprived parts of Manchester. Recognising that cancer can often be a taboo subject, especially within certain cultural contexts, Answer Cancer seeks to break down the barriers that prevent open discussions about the disease. By fostering an environment where individuals feel empowered to talk about cancer symptoms and experiences, the programme aims to increase understanding and encourage proactive health behaviours.

One of the core principles of Answer Cancer is the importance of representation. The programme emphasises the need for relatable figures within the community, such as our Cancer Champions, who can share their personal journeys and provide support. These champions play a crucial role in raising awareness, dispelling myths, and encouraging others to seek help when they notice symptoms. Their presence not only helps to normalise conversations about cancer but also inspires confidence in individuals who may feel isolated in their struggles.

Through community engagement, tailored workshops, and culturally sensitive messaging, Answer Cancer is committed to improving cancer screening rates and ultimately saving lives. By focusing on education and awareness, the initiative aims to empower individuals with the knowledge they need to reduce their cancer risk and navigate the healthcare system effectively. Together, we can create a supportive network that champions health equity and ensures that everyone, regardless of their background, has access to the information and resources they need for early detection and treatment.

Answer Cancer is a joint project between BHA For Equality, Salford CVS, Voluntary Sector North West and Unique Improvements. Our work is funded by NHS England.

To further enhance its impact, Answer Cancer offers a grants programme that supports community-led initiatives focused on cancer awareness and prevention.
